Trust Levels

Our forum software, Discourse, organizes user roles by a system known as Trust Levels. These vary from 0 to 4, with 0 being the default for new users. Level 0, or New users, have a few limitations in place as they get used to our forums. Most people will reach Level 1 within their first day.

In general, from TL0 to TL3, your Trust Level will automatically rise over time just by participating in discussions. The details of what each Trust Level grants, as well as how to reach them, are listed in detail below.

Level 3 and 4 can use their Trust Levels as a custom title.

Level 0 — Newbie

Users who just joined the forum community and are still learning the norms and way the forum works. New users’ abilities are restricted for safety during this adjustment period.

TL0 users are limited to:

  • Posting only 1 image and/or 2 hyperlinks in a post
  • Mentioning no more than 2 users in a post
Level 1 — Basic

The default Level for the majority of users. Most functionality is unlocked. Achieved by:

  • Entering at least 5 topics
  • Reading at least 30 posts
  • Spending a total of 10 minutes reading posts

TL1 users can:

  • Use all core Discourse functions; all new user restrictions on images, hyperlinkds, topics, replies, etc. are removed
  • Edit wiki posts
  • Flag posts for Moderator review
Level 2 — Member

Users who have earned extended privileges by participating in the community. Level 2 users are the faces you’ll frequently see engaging in threads and speaking with new users! Achieved by:

  • Visiting at least 15 days
  • Casting at least 1 like
  • Receiving at least 1 like
  • Replying to at least 3 different topics
  • Entering at least 20 topics
  • Reading at least 100 posts
  • Spending a total of 60 minutes reading posts

TL2 users can:

  • Use the “Invite others to this topic” button for one-click onboarding of new users to participate in topics
  • Invite outside users to PMs making a group PM
  • Have their daily like limit increased by 1.5× (to 150)
Level 3 — Regular

The backbone of our community – the most active readers and reliable contributors over a period of months, even years. We trust these users to help tidy up and organize the community. Achieved by:

  • Must have visited at least 50% of last 100 days

  • Must have replied to at least 10 different topics

  • Of topics created in the last 100 days, must have viewed 10% (capped at 500)

  • Of posts created in the last 100 days, must have read 10% (capped at 20k)

  • Must have received 20 likes, and given 30 likes.

  • Must not have received more than 5 unique spam or offensive flags

  • Must not have been suspended or silenced

  • These likes must be across a minimum number of different users (1/5 the number), across a minimum number of different days (1/4 the number). Likes cannot be from PMs.

All of the above criteria must be true to achieve trust level 3. Furthermore, unlike other trust levels, you can lose trust level 3 status . Dipping below the requirements after a 2 week grace period will result in their Level reverting to 2.

TL3 Users can:

  • Recategorize and rename topics
  • Access the Regular’s Club, only visible to TL3 and higher users
  • Have all their links followed
  • TL3 spam flags cast on TL0 user posts immediately hide the post
  • TL3 flags cast on TL0 user posts in sufficient diversity will auto-silence the user and hide all their posts
  • Make their own posts wiki (editable by any TL1+ users)
  • Like 200 times per day
Level 4 — Leader

Leaders are the Regulars of the Regulars. They set a positive example for the community through their actions and their posts. If you need advice, these are the folks you turn to first, and they’ve earned the highest level of community trust along with basic moderation powers. Can only be achieved by direct promotion from TL3 at Moderation team discretion.

Users at trust level 4 can…

  • Edit all posts
  • Pin/unpin topics
  • Close topics
  • Archive topics
  • Make topics unlisted
  • Split and merge topics
  • Reset topic bump dates
  • Like 300 times per day
  • Cast a flag on any post to immediately hide it until full Moderator review

Many badges, such as “First Post” or “First Like” are attainable in straight-forward ways – like posting or liking. These badges are available at all times.

Badges under the “Special” category, can only be achieved by time-limited means. For example, the “Pioneer” badge can only be gotten by posting 25 times and making 1 new topic during the first month of the forum’s launch. For details on how particular badges can be gotten, please don’t hesitate to message me.

User Titles

You may have noticed that some users have a special phrase, aka User Title, next to their username when they post.

These serve to distinguish members of our community who have earned recognition for things such as:

  • Serving in one of our forum teams
  • Being omnipresent in our Q&A sections
  • Writing for one of our sites
  • Winning a competition here
  • Reaching Trust Levels 3/4

They’re essentially a badge that will be displayed wherever you go!
