YGO Mafia [R1] :: Day Thread [3]

:: – Welcome to Battle City :: Day Thread 3 – ::

Please Note

Players are expected to log on at least once each day to keep up with the discussion threads. Each player is required to post once per Day Phase and submit Night Actions. For failure to submit night actions, the first time will be a warning. Afterwards, it will result in 2000 LP of damage being taken.

Basic info

You are not allowed to discuss this game with anyone but me, or any chats I put you into. There is to be no DM’ing, or else the game falls apart.

You

You are a player and a resident of Domino City. You will have a GM-given role (i.e., I’ll give you Town/Mafia/3rd party) and you win if you or your team succeed in that goal. Use your special abilities during the night phase to defeat/investigate your enemies - or try to convince the majority of players during the day phase into lynching your target.

Every player controls a Duelist with 4000 LP. If you lose all your LP you will Die and can no longer send in any further actions or talk about the game in the day thread. Hope that your team uses your death well!

Teams

  1. There are 3 factions in this game: Town, Mafia, and 3rd Party.
  2. Town wants to eliminate all the Mafia. Each town player starts alone and has no knowledge of who is on his team.
  3. Mafia wants to eliminate all the Town. The Mafia know who each other are and can talk in private together about their plans - however, they are outnumbered and cannot brute-force their way to victory.
  4. 3rd Party players have their own specific goals - they are not aligned with Town, Mafia, or any other player. They are the wildcards of each game.
  • True Neutral (TN): Has a unique wincon to accomplish.
  • Serial Killer (SK): A powerful foe. You can assume their wincon is “kill everyone.”
  1. The game ends when a team has no more threats remaining. The team surviving is the winner - that team’s members will earn a badge and unique User Title to display for two mafia rounds.
Gameplay
  1. There are two phases in this game: Day and Night . The Game begins on Day 1, proceeds to Night 1, then Day 2, etc.
  2. During the Day Phase, all players are free to discuss any suspicions they have inside the Discussion Thread. Players may vote to Lynch someone by voting for them in the lynch thread. If a Player receives the majority of Lynch votes, they will be Lynched and lose 2000 LP.
  3. During the Night Phase, all living players may submit their actions to me via DM. They may use Abilities freely unless otherwise limited. Typically, Mafia will target Players to kill them, and Town will seek use their large variety of abilities to attack, defend, or investigate. 3rd Party does whatever 3rd Party does.
  4. After all actions have been submitted, I will post a story about the interactions between all the actions. This story serves as vital clues, spelling out which Characters did what. Figure out who controls each Character, and you can get a good idea of who is on your team!
  5. The game proceeds to the next Day Phase and continues until a Win Condition is fulfilled. Typically, it is “Eliminate all hostile players.”

tl;dr: The game goes Night -> Day -> Night -> Day -> etc. During Night, you kill each other with abilities. During Day, you use a majority vote to lynch people.

If you’re still confused, let us know if you have questions.

Definition of Various Terms
  • Day Phase: The Lynching part of the game. Town uses this to try to oust the Mafia.
  • Night Phase: The abilities part of the game. Mafia uses this to try to kill the Players.
  • Lynch: Put someone up to a vote. If they receive a majority of the vote, they lose 2000 LP.
  • Attack: Wound a Player, removing a specific number of LP from them.
  • Block: Prevent a Player from using their night abilities. Blocks do not affect other blocks.
  • Dodge: Negate one Attack targeting you per night. This is outside of Priority and can only be superseded by Attacks that specifically can’t be dodged or something similar.
  • Protect: Prevent a target Player from being wounded. Protects cancel out only 1 Attack.
  • Redirect: Cause ALL actions that a Player performs to go to another Player of your choosing.
  • Investigate: Learn a hint about that player’s Team.
  • Track: Learn who that player targeted that night.
  • Cooldown: The number of nights that must pass before an ability can be used again. (So, a 1-night cooldown means you have to wait the current night AND the next night before you can use that skill again.)
FAQ

Q: Can I use multiple abilities in the same day?
A: HECK YES, unless otherwise specified.

Q: Can I say that I’m Town/Mafia in the game channel?
A: Yes, but you can’t prove anything. Quoting any message I send you into the chat is not allowed, but you may copy and paste.

Q: What does X on my role mean?
A: Ask me via DM to keep your role a secret.

Q: What shows up in the story?
A: Unless specified by an ability, all actions that interfere with another Character appear in the story, done under the player’s Character (not their actual username, but a nickname made by the GM). I’ll specify if an action does not show up in the story.

Q: How many different kinds of abilities are there?
A: More than the ones listed above. Expect weird (and fun!) ones.

Q: What happens if abilities conflict with each other?
A: Good ol’ chaos happens. See details below on priority and naming.

Priority

On occasion, Player A and Player B will have an ability that says, “Attack Player C.” But Player C has a passive that says, “Dodge one attack per night. cannot be Blocked.” But Player A has a passive that says, “Your Attacks cannot be Dodged.” What happens?

Every skill is given a Priority Tier – skills activate in order from their Tier and can stop lower Tiered abilities. For example, a Tier 2 ability will defeat any conflicting abilities below Tier 2, but can be beaten by Tier 1.

In general, Offensive Skills are even-numbered and Defensive skills are odd-numbered. Tier 0 skills will never fail and there will never be a contradiction involving them, but they typically carry drawbacks.

Typically:

  • Tier 0: EA Games tier of broken
  • Tier 1: Redirects
  • Tier 2: Piercing Attacks
  • Tier 3: Protects, Heals, Blocks
  • Tier 4: Standard Attacks, Investigation actions, most actions

But passive abilities can screw with this.

Example of Played Yu-Gi-Oh! Mafia (and deviations from normal mafia)

What does a game look like when actually played out? Let’s say that below is your kit.

(This is a sample kit and in no way indicative of what Kaiba’s kit would look like in the actual game.)

Seto Kaiba, Town, Example kit

You are Seto Kaiba AKA Screw the Rules I Have Money and a member of the Town. You win when all hostile parties are eliminated.

You have 4000 Life Points. If you lose all your Life Points, you will die and no longer be able to act in the game.

Duelist Passive: Master of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon

Each night, your Blue-Eyes White Dragon will not be destroyed by the first spell or trap card that would destroy it.

Trap Card Passive: Crush Card Virus

Dodge the first lethal attack made against you each night.

Active 1 (Monster): Blue-Eyes White Dragon (3000 Atk)

Target 1 player: attack them for 3000 life points of damage. In addition, you may choose one of the following to enhance your attack:

  • Megamorph: If your lifepoints are less than or equal to half of your opponent’s, resolve combat as if Blue-Eyes White Dragon had an extra 1000 attack. (2-night cooldown)
  • The Flute of Summoning Dragon: Summon a second Blue-Eyes White Dragon with 3000 Atk. It can only attack and defend. (2-night cooldown)

Active 2 (Spell Card): Enemy Controller

Active one of the following effects:

  • Target 1 player; block their first attack tonight.
  • Target 2 players; redirect the first player’s attack to the second player, if an attack was made. (3-night cooldown)

First, let’s go over the different pieces of the kit:

Life Points are analogous to HP in other mafia rounds. Don’t let yours hit zero!

Duelist Passive: Similar to other rounds, a passive based on your chosen character.

Trap Card Passive: A new type of passive! Trap cards automatically activate when triggered (as long as they’re off cooldown) and have powerful effects to control the flow of battle. Be wary of your opponent’s traps!

Monster Card Active: Each player will have at least 1 monster used to attack and defend their life points. You can send your monster to defend another player, but that means exposing your life points! If your monster is destroyed, you will need help reviving it for the next night.

Spell Card Active: Powerful effects used to change the flow of battle, destroy monster or trap cards, and provide utility.

Combat is straightforward—it’s Monster A’s attack minus Monster B’s attack. So if Yugi’s Dark Magician (2500 Atk) attacks Kaiba’s Blue-Eyes White Dragon (3000 Atk), Yugi loses 500 life points and his Dark Magician, leaving his life points wide open to being attack directly.

Reviving Monsters: Certain town members (and hostiles!) will have the ability to revive a player’s monster during the day phase. Else, your monster active be will be placed on a 1-night cooldown and you will have to survive the night without your life points reaching 0! They will automatically return at the beginning of the next night phase.

So if Yugi loses Dark Magician on N1 and nobody revives it for him, he has to survive N2. Dark Magician will return to him on N3.

Defending Players: Say Yugi needs to get through N2, but he has no monster cards. You can choose to send your monster to defend his life points, but that means your monster cannot defend yours. If you’re defeated, your monster disappears as well. Coordination between town members is crucial!

Priority: Some skills have priorities as in normal mafia. But others don’t. In Yugioh mafia, priority goes Traps > Monster Skills (self) > Magic = Monster Skills (other). In the event of a tie, the player with the lowest life points gets priority. If a player’s life points are equal, then Discobot decides.

Here we have a DPS character for the Town - Kaiba wants to attack the mafia while using his passives to keep his Blue-Eyes on the field. His firepower means he’s a major threat to the Mafia and they want to take him out as quickly as possible.

It is Night Phase 2, and Town has lynched Discobot, bringing them down to 2000 life points. However, you are down to 1000 life points.

Your submission might look like this:

Blue-Eyes White Dragon :: Megamorph --> Attack Discobot
Enemy Controller --> Block Discobot’s first attack

Part of the next story post will then go like so:

Day 3 will then begin, and players will use their information to figure out who they think is the Mafia.

What did you learn? You know that Discobot is controlling the Mindless Puppet. You also know that Daddy Issues is probably allied with the Mindless Puppet. Maybe somebody investigated them last night…?

Rules:

Remember, if these rules aren’t followed, the entire game may be ruined, so let’s do our best to keep them intact!

If you have questions, PM us both @jakeyb @GawainDeliveries.

  1. You are not allowed to send a Private Message to anyone else about this Mafia Round except for us. The exception is the Mafia team, who have a group private message.
  2. You are not allowed to post any Private Message from the GMs in this thread.
  3. You can claim whatever you want in this thread, but nothing is confirmed unless a GM confirms it.
  4. For Town to win, they need to kill all Mafia members. For Mafia to win, they need to kill all Town members. For the Third Party… well, they’ve got a specific win con.
  5. Don’t delete messages. It breaks the spirit of the game by functioning as a pseudo-PM, annoys everyone who didn’t see the message, and handicaps the fight heavily in favor of Town.
  6. If you die, you get added to the deadchat PM. You are NOT ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT THE GAME IN THE DAY THREAD.

A few important changes

  1. @GawainDeliveries is helping me out :) Plz be mean to him.
  2. In the night story, instead of identifying Monsters by name, we will be using their types (Spellcaster, Insect, Aqua, etc).
  3. Priorities are a little different:

Priority: Some skills have priorities as in normal mafia. But others don’t. In Yugioh mafia, priority goes Traps > Monster Skills (self) > Magic = Monster Skills (other). In the event of a tie, the player with the lowest life points gets priority. If a player’s life points are equal, then Discobot decides.

  1. Since this is the first round, we might be fine-tuning some kits on the fly. Please be patient with us, as we want everybody to have a fun experience :)

May the best duelist win!
